Capitol Management Consulting Services (CMCS) has worked with a mortgage industry client to develop and implement a customizable, scalable, and auditable project management methodology for their IT department. The methodology was developed in partnership with the client’s senior management team to improve strategic and financial transparency and communication between the business, IT, and internal & external audit departments.

In addition to improving transparency, the methodology also gave the client a standardized process which will allow for future process improvement efforts to be conducting using a quantifiable and scientific approach leveraging data, rather than anecdotal insights. CMCS also supported the client with developing job aids and training materials which were used during the enterprise wide roll out of the new methodology. The new methodology resulted in a 25% decrease in audit findings within its first year; even with training sessions continuing well into the second year.

CMCS was later brought on by a directorate within the same client’s IT organization to provide subject matter expertise on the methodology. A study on the current state of the organization was conducted which focused on the use of formalized business processes and improving internal control processes. Additionally, CMCS provided project reviews, methodology training, and job aids to project managers working on in-flight projects. This training material is currently in use by the directorate to on-board new consultants to familiarize them with the methodology and how it is used within the directorate. The directorate’s program & portfolio managers were also provided with tools to continue improving implementation of the methodology, review and self-audit, and automate business and reporting processes.
